DESCRIPTION:
PoLoS investigates existing schemes for location-based services (LBS) and the latest technological achievements in the areas of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), positioning techniques and wireless networks in order to design and implement an integrated platform capable of supporting the full lifecycle of LBS, i.e., service development, deployment and provisioning. PoLoS addresses problems such as portability, re-usability and technology independence met by most of the contemporary LBS provisioning solutions. The platform is independent of specific hardware/software, de-coupled from the service logic, thus, allowing for easy introduction of new services and independent of both the underlying network infrastructure (e.g., 2G/3G, WLAN), the network transport and the GIS technology used. Support for both indoor and outdoor environments is provided while users roaming between those two environments are continuously served. Other crucial issues regarding the platform are its scalability and efficiency to serve large numbers of requests. Finally the problem of service creation is addressed by providing an open Service Creation Environment in the form of an IDE, which allows the building of new services with minimum effort.
